Integrating advanced materials, cell design and manufacturing development for high-performance batteries aimed at mobility (Batt4EU Partnership)

Funds projects that adapt existing battery production lines for the shift from liquid-electrolyte to solid-state lithium-ion cells.

ClosedEuropean CommissionEU

This Research and Innovation Action from the European Commission implements the co-programmed Batt4EU Partnership on batteries, funding projects that adapt existing production lines for the shift from liquid-electrolyte to solid-state lithium-ion cells. Funded projects must also report their results to Batt4EU to support its own KPI monitoring, on top of standard Commission reporting. The Commissi…

Proposals must target quasi- or all-solid-state lithium-ion battery technology — up to 5% liquid electrolyte by weight, using silicon-carbon composite or lithium-metal anodes — and pick at least one critical manufacturing process to adapt within an existing production line rather than replace the whole line. Work must cover adapting existing machinery for the chosen process, pilot-testing the change against clear metrics such as energy use, yield and product consistency, and tailoring cell design to exploit the improved process; at least one digitalisation task, such as advanced process control or virtual process simulation, is also required. Proposals must describe a procurement strategy that uses materials, products and equipment made in the EU or Horizon Europe associated countries unless no valid option exists, and must include a preliminary business plan and feasibility study wherever project results are expected to lead to a marketed product, process or service.
