The Innovation Works Seed Fund is a direct equity investment vehicle operated by Innovation Works, a Ben Franklin Technology Partners affiliate serving the nine-county southwestern Pennsylvania region. Since 1999, the Seed Fund has deployed $93 million across 372 companies. Innovation Works' overall portfolio of 780+ companies has raised $3.54 billion in follow-on capital and logged 77 exits, underscoring the fund's position as a primary regional source of institutional early-stage capital.

Initial investments range from $150,000 to $250,000. Portfolio companies that continue to perform can receive up to $800,000 in total follow-on investment from Innovation Works across multiple rounds. The fund is geography-constrained to southwestern Pennsylvania and targets companies from pre-seed through Series A stage. AlphaLab accelerator graduates are a primary source of deal flow and often receive Seed Fund investment as a direct continuation of the accelerator relationship. No sector restrictions apply beyond a requirement for a scalable technology idea and a demonstrated market opportunity; past investments span software, hardware, medtech, biotech, robotics, and advanced manufacturing. Applications are evaluated on a rolling basis with no fixed deadline.

The Seed Fund's investment thesis centers on founders with a dedicated team, clear IP or competitive moat, and a credible path to significant revenue. Companies should have a defined market opportunity and, ideally, early customer traction or a prototype. Innovation Works pairs portfolio companies with managing directors who provide operational guidance alongside capital, and the fund coordinates with Riverfront Ventures on co-investment. The Pittsburgh location requirement is firm; remote-only teams are not eligible.

Direct equity investment of $150,000–$250,000 (up to $800,000 total follow-on) for early-stage technology startups in southwestern Pennsylvania.
