The Lithuania–Japan Joint Research Programme is an annual bilateral scheme operated by the Research Council of Lithuania (LMT) in partnership with the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), running continuously since 2017. The programme funds collaborative scientific projects between Lithuanian and Japanese research teams, covering costs on each side independently. Eligible cost categories on the Lithuanian side include research activities, dissemination of results, partner visits to Japan, joint seminar hosting in Lithuania or Japan, and publication of project outcomes.

Two grant types are available. Research projects may receive up to EUR 100,000 on the Lithuanian side and run for a maximum of 24 months. Dissemination projects, intended to share results of completed work, are capped at EUR 20,000 and run for up to 12 months. Only Lithuanian universities and research organisations may apply; for-profit entities and individuals are ineligible. A confirmed Japanese co-applicant submitting through JSPS on the Japanese side is a hard requirement — solo Lithuanian applications are not accepted.

Each annual cycle follows a consistent calendar: the call opens in June, applications close in September, assessment runs through February, awards are announced in March, and projects start in April. The 2026 call is expected to follow this pattern, though exact dates had not been confirmed as of early 2026. Competitive positioning depends on the strength of the Lithuanian–Japanese collaboration, scientific relevance, and the track record of both teams. Contact for the Lithuanian side is Asta Aleksandravičienė at LMT.

Annual bilateral research grants with Japan's JSPS, offering up to €100,000 for 24-month research projects or up to €20,000 for 12-month dissemination projects, requiring a paired Japanese co-applicant.
