Almi Innovation Loan
Supports high-risk Swedish innovation projects through subordinated co-financing loans for prototype development, testing, and commercial scaling.
The Almi Innovation Loan (Innovationslån) is a state-backed lending instrument operated by Almi Företagspartner, Sweden's government-owned business financier, designed to support Swedish SMEs pursuing higher-risk innovation activities that fall outside standard bank credit criteria. The program finances prototype development, technology testing, business model verification, and production preparation for companies developing new products, services, processes, or business models. Almi positions itself explicitly as a risk-tolerant complement to commercial banks rather than a substitute for them.
Loan amounts run from SEK 50,000 to SEK 500,000 per application, with repayment terms of three to five years in typical cases and a maximum ceiling of 96 months (eight years). Interest rates are set individually and may exceed standard market rates to reflect elevated project risk. Almi co-finances up to 50 percent of total project costs; the remainder must be covered by equity, bank financing, or other external sources. Eligible borrowers are Swedish-registered companies with up to 249 employees that can demonstrate a genuine financing gap — that is, that the capital need cannot be met by conventional bank lending alone. All industries are eligible, and no sector restrictions are applied across the innovation loan product.
Applicants should expect a three-to-four-week processing timeline. The innovation loan suits pre-commercial or early-commercial ventures whose project risk profile, absence of collateral, or novelty of the business model makes conventional bank financing unavailable. Because Almi demands a co-financing commitment, applicants benefit from arriving with a credible plan for the remaining 50 percent of project costs — whether from equity rounds, regional grants, or bank relationships — before submitting.
Provides subordinated co-financing for Swedish SMEs developing novel products, services, or processes where commercial bank lending is unavailable due to elevated innovation risk.
