The Taiwan International Graduate Program (TIGP) is a doctoral training initiative co-hosted by Academia Sinica and partner universities in Taiwan, designed primarily for international students seeking Ph.D. education in interdisciplinary research environments. TIGP currently offers approximately 12 disciplinary tracks, including Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, Chemical Biology, Sustainable Chemical Science, Molecular Sciences, Earth Sciences, Nano Science, Social Networks, and Translational Medicine, among others. All coursework, research supervision, and dissertation defence are conducted in English. Students are admitted in an annual cycle, with applications typically reviewed in the autumn and winter preceding a September or February start.
TIGP students receive a monthly stipend of approximately NT$34,000 — equivalent to roughly USD 1,000 at current exchange rates — throughout their doctoral enrolment. Each student is supervised by a principal investigator at one of Academia Sinica's research institutes and is simultaneously enrolled at a partner university, through which the doctoral degree is formally awarded. Degree programmes typically run four to five years. Enrichment activities, laboratory rotations, and internship opportunities are built into the curriculum structure. Detailed scholarship terms, additional fellowship supplements, and tuition arrangements are described on TIGP's dedicated Scholarship and Grants page.
TIGP is primarily intended for non-Taiwanese international applicants, though Taiwanese nationals may apply to specific tracks. Admission is competitive and research-background-dependent; applicants are evaluated on academic transcripts, research experience, letters of recommendation, and a statement of purpose aligned with their chosen track. Applications are submitted through the TIGP online portal; contact for inquiries is tigp@gate.sinica.edu.tw. Prospective students should identify a preferred research track and review the faculty list to identify potential supervisors before submitting an application, as matching with an available principal investigator is central to the selection process.
