Black Leaders in Diabetes PhD Studentship Scheme
Funds one 3-year diabetes PhD studentship a year for a science graduate from a Black background.
An internal Panel, drawn mostly from the Research Committee plus other established researchers, scores every application on four things: relevance to diabetes, the supervisor's own training record and environment, how suitable the project is for PhD training, and the scientific quality of the project itself -- there is no external peer review at any point. The scheme supports UK academic or NHS Trust supervisors who want to recruit a science graduate from a Black background onto a PhD in diabetes-related research, to encourage more Black researchers into scientific careers. It is not open to applicants with medical degrees or Allied Healthcare Professionals, who have a separate clinical training fellowship instead. Only one studentship is awarded per round, with roughly a 50% success rate.
