The Maryland Makerspace Initiative Program (MMIP) is a grant programme administered by TEDCO, the Maryland Technology Development Corporation, that funds the creation, expansion, or programming development of community makerspaces in Maryland. TEDCO defines a makerspace as a community space providing access to tools, technology, and knowledge for learners and entrepreneurs that results in the prototyping or creation of physical goods and supports technical education for personal growth. The 2026 cycle offered awards of up to $100,000 per applicant. Three eligible project categories exist: new makerspace establishment, facility expansion of an existing makerspace, and development of new makerspace programming. A mandatory 1:1 match in non-state funds is required for all awards; qualifying match contributions include cash from the applicant organisation, donated materials, tools and equipment, contributed workspace, volunteer time, and other in-kind resources, making the match achievable for nonprofits without large cash reserves. Eligible applicants are local governments, government-designated agencies or nonprofits, and other nonprofit entities; for-profit companies and individuals are not eligible. For the 2026 cycle the Request for Applications was released on March 16, 2026 and the application window closed on May 15, 2026 at 5:00 PM EST via tedco.jotform.com; this cycle is closed. Organisations interested in a future cycle should monitor announcements from mmip@tedcomd.com or contact Justin Ferguson at jferguson@tedcomd.com. In future competitive cycles, the strongest applications will demonstrate community access commitments, an identified physical location, partnerships with educational institutions, and a credible post-grant sustainability plan for the makerspace.
Grants up to $100,000 with a 1:1 match requirement for Maryland nonprofits and local governments establishing new community makerspaces, expanding facilities, or developing makerspace programming.
