The New Mexico Advanced Energy Award (NMAEA) R&D Class is a competitive, state-funded non-dilutive grant administered by the Technology and Innovation Office (TIO) of the New Mexico Economic Development Department. It targets early-stage small businesses developing novel advanced energy technologies. The program's R&D Class specifically supports foundational research, proof-of-concept projects, and early product development — from scientific inquiry to early prototypes. TIO defines advanced energy as technology and innovation that makes energy use cleaner, safer, more secure, and more reliable.

Awards can reach up to $1,000,000 per applicant, though TIO asks applicants to request only what they actually need to complete the proposed work. There is no stated minimum. Awards are not guaranteed at the maximum — TIO scores applications and makes final award decisions based on scoring and available funding. Past awards have ranged from $300,000 to $925,000 in recent cycles (2024–2025).

Eligibility for the R&D Class is limited to for-profit small businesses headquartered in New Mexico. This is a stricter location rule than the Pilot Projects Class (which accepts out-of-state firms with a New Mexico presence). A key requirement: the NMAEA cannot be the first money a company receives — applicants must document previously secured funding from other sources. Nonprofit organizations and government entities are not referenced as eligible.

The application process is online and competitive. The program runs periodic cycles; applications were closed as of the date of verification. No specific scoring rubric is published on the program page, but TIO evaluates applications using scoring and available funding as the basis for awards. Finalists may be invited to a pitch event — in 2024 and 2025, two companies each received an additional $10,000 bonus for the best pitch at the finalist pitch event.

Key caveats: the R&D Class award can only be applied for by NM-headquartered companies; out-of-state companies must apply under the separate Pilot Projects Class. The NMAEA cannot be first money in — companies without prior documented funding will be disqualified. The program runs approximately annually but the exact cycle schedule is not pre-announced.
