TIA Technology Development Fund
Provides research teams and institutions for TIA Technology Development Fund in agriculture innovation, biotechnology, and energy systems.
The TIA Technology Development Fund is a continuously open South African grant instrument supporting the translation of validated concepts into market-ready prototypes. Operated by the Technology Innovation Agency — a statutory body under the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) established through the Technology Innovation Agency Act No. 26 of 2008 — the fund targets the mid-stage innovation gap between proof of concept and finished product prototype, spanning TRL 4 through TRL 7.
Eligible applicants include SMMEs, higher education institutions (HEIs), science councils, and startups registered and operating in South Africa. The fund is sector-agnostic within TIA's eight priority domains: advanced manufacturing, agriculture, energy, health, ICT, indigenous knowledge systems, industrial biotech, and natural resources. Specific award amounts denominated in South African rand are not publicly disclosed; interested parties are directed to contact TIA at customerservice@tia.org.za for indicative figures. Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis — there are no fixed cohort or deadline dates.
Applicants best positioned for the Technology Development Fund are those who have cleared the proof-of-concept gate (TRL 4) and can demonstrate a credible path to product prototype (TRL 7). Unlike the Seed Fund, which is channelled through technology transfer offices and incubators, the Technology Development Fund accepts eligible entities more broadly, though institutional affiliation or SMME registration in South Africa remains a prerequisite. The fund occupies the central rung of TIA's three-tier development ladder — above the Seed Fund and below the Commercialisation Support Fund — making it the primary vehicle for teams with working demonstrations seeking to reach prototype stage.
Technology development from proof of concept to product prototype (TRL 4–7) for South African SMMEs, universities, science councils, and startups across all priority sectors.
