TIA Grassroots Innovation Programme
Invests research teams and institutions for TIA Grassroots Innovation in agriculture innovation, hardware, and manufacturing.
The Technology Innovation Agency (TIA), a South African state entity established under the Technology Innovation Agency Act No. 26 of 2008 and operating under the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation, administers the Grassroots Innovation Programme (GIP) to support individual innovators who sit outside formal R&D institutions. The program targets South Africans with early-stage ideas and inventions that have practical application potential but lack the institutional support available to university or corporate researchers. TIA's mission is to bridge the gap between research outputs and commercial or social application, and the GIP specifically addresses grassroots-level innovators who would not otherwise access the agency's technology development or commercialization funds.
The GIP provides multi-tiered support rather than a single lump-sum award: components include idea development assistance, business skills training, prototype development funding, and mentorship. The maximum grant for technology development activities is ZAR 200,000, and a project fee of ZAR 60,000 is available per 12-month period. Only individuals are eligible — the program explicitly excludes companies, nonprofits, universities, and research organizations. Applicants must be based in South Africa. The program operates on a rolling intake with no fixed cohort dates or published application deadlines.
To maximize the chance of success, applicants should document a clearly articulated problem and solution, demonstrate the innovation's technological novelty, and show how the requested support would advance the idea toward a testable prototype. TIA's sector priorities include advanced manufacturing, agriculture, energy, health, ICT, indigenous knowledge systems, industrial biotech, and natural resources — applications in these domains align well with the agency's stated focus areas. Applicants unfamiliar with the process should contact TIA at customerservice@tia.org.za or +27 (0) 12 472 2700 before submitting.
