Mitacs Elevate
Connects research teams and universities in Canada that are turning innovation ideas into reliable market-ready products.
Mitacs Elevate sits under Mitacs and funds one- to two-year postdoctoral fellowships built around industry-embedded research. Fellows spend at least half their time on site with a Canadian partner, so the program is aimed at turning academic research into applied work with a commercial or social use case. The standard package is $60,000 a year, or $120,000 over two years, with the partner contributing $30,000 a year. Fellow stipends start at $55,000 a year, research costs can reach $5,000 a year, and the program adds a professional development curriculum valued at $7,500. Intake runs year-round with no fixed deadline, and applications move through administrative screening before external peer review. Strong applications pair a completed PhD, a Canadian academic appointment, and a clear partner need that justifies on-site work. Eligible partners are Canadian-incorporated end users, including for-profit companies, not-for-profits, hospitals, and municipalities, while government departments, academic institutions, Indigenous governments, and foreign companies are excluded. The program fits researchers who can work inside a partner environment and show that the fellowship will advance both the research and the host organization.
