European Research Council (ERC) Grants

Supports EU frontier research grants for individual researchers early career to established leaders excellence the only criterion.

European CommissionEUGrant

The ERC funds frontier 'investigator-driven' research across all scientific and scholarly domains. Selection is based on a single criterion — scientific excellence. Grant types cover the full researcher career arc: Starting Grant (StG, 2–7 years post-PhD, up to €1.5M); Consolidator Grant (CoG, 7–12 years post-PhD, up to €2M); Advanced Grant (AdG, established leaders, up to €2.5M); Synergy Grant (2–4 joint PIs, up to €10M for 6 years); and Proof of Concept (PoC, existing ERC grantees only, €150K lump sum). A new ERC Plus grant type was introduced in the 2026 Work Programme. Delivery is managed by ERCEA (European Research Council Executive Agency) under autonomous Scientific Council steering. All grants run for 5 years (6 years for SyG). Applications submitted via EU Funding & Tenders Portal (SEDIA). Evaluation is two-step: Step 1 panel, Step 2 panel + external reviewers + interview (for StG/CoG/AdG). The 2026 WP reduced the scientific proposal (Part B) to 7 pages for StG, CoG, and AdG.
