Fundamental and Applied Research Projects (FLPP)
Provides competitive grants for fundamental and applied research across all scientific fields at Latvian research institutions.
Fundamental and Applied Research Projects (FLPP) is the Latvian Council of Science’s main competitive research grant programme. It is financed from the state budget and open across all scientific fields, so it serves as the broad annual call for Latvian research institutions. In 2025 it funded 56 projects from EUR 16.8 million out of 623 submissions, which put the acceptance rate near 9 percent. Typical projects run for 36 months in three 12-month phases, and the median award was about EUR 300,000. The 2026 call is expected in March to May, with contracts signed in November 2026, and applications are handled in Latvian through the national portal. The programme fits established research institutions that can carry a three-year project and compete in a crowded national call. Recent leading implementers included the University of Latvia, Riga Technical University, and the Latvian Biomedicine Research Centre, which points to a preference for teams with enough depth, infrastructure, and publication track record to absorb a full grant cycle.
Each grant below is a distinct funding opportunity with its own eligibility, scope, and deliverables.
