The Governor's University Research Initiative, established in 2015, provides matching cost-reimbursement grants to Texas public colleges and universities to recruit distinguished researchers from outside the Texas public/private higher education system. Awards reach up to $5 million per distinguished researcher. The target researcher must be a Nobel Laureate, member of a National Academy (Sciences, Engineering, or Medicine), or hold comparable national academic recognition in STEM or medicine. Applications require endorsement from the institution president, governing board chair, and chancellor and must demonstrate potential to enhance Texas competitiveness. The program is governed by Texas Education Code §62 and 19 TAC §190.1, with rolling submissions via an online portal.
