EIT RawMaterials
Supports European raw materials innovation through startup-focused development growth projects.
EIT RM is the European Institute of Innovation and Technology's Knowledge and Innovation Community for mining, processing, recycling, and the circular economy. Established in 2015 and based in Berlin, it works across a large European partnership network that includes 350+ universities and 750+ ERMA partners.
Its funding is co-financed rather than fully granted. The EIT contribution typically covers 50% to 70% of project budgets, with the consortium supplying the remainder in cash and in-kind support. Its main routes are Booster, KAVA Upscaling Innovation Projects, and KAVA RIS Innovation Projects, with awards ranging from €500,000 to €2.5 million. The portfolio figures are substantial: more than €330 million in startup investment, 600+ startups supported, and 220+ innovation projects brought to market.
The strongest fit is a consortium that can show market traction, knowledge-triangle breadth, and a credible transition from technical development to deployment. EIT RM looks for proposals that close material loops, secure supply through substitution, or improve responsible extraction, and its open calls expect a market analysis, go-to-market plan, and environmental impact case where relevant. The model is hands-on and partner-led, with SeedBook used for submissions and EIT RM acting as the KIC layer between EIT funding and project teams.
