Horizon Space: SiC Substrates for GaN MMICs (Phase A)

Funds one €6–7M project to industrialise an EU source of semi-insulating SiC substrates — the wafer base for the GaN chips in satellite radios.

Europe's satellites depend on GaN radio-frequency chips, and those chips are built on semi-insulating silicon-carbide wafers that today come almost entirely from outside the EU — often under export controls. This topic funds Phase A of fixing that: developing and industrialising an EU-based source of 100/150 mm semi-insulating SiC substrates, named directly in the EU's critical-technologies roadma

Development and industrialisation of an EU-based semi-insulating SiC substrate capability at 100/150 mm — the wafer foundation for GaN RF and mm-wave chips used in space. One award covering supply-chain build-up, qualification planning against space standards (ECSS, ESCC), and a commercialisation roadmap.
