Carbon sinks and sources on land and in the ocean are central to climate scenarios, but their drivers and magnitudes remain uncertain. This scheduled Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Action funds five €5 million projects to improve the evidence used for mitigation strategies, carbon budgets and national reporting.

Improve understanding and quantification of land, inland-water and ocean carbon dioxide sources and sinks, their natural and anthropogenic drivers, and their behaviour under past, present and future climate and land-use scenarios. Each proposal selects one area: A, oceanic CO₂ sources and sinks; B, land CO₂ sources and sinks; or C, reconciliation of different land-use CO₂ estimates. Work addresses lateral carbon transfers, mitigation and carbon-removal implications, consistent data and models, open access to new or substantially improved models and tools, and coordination with ESA FutureEO Carbon Cluster projects and relevant international partners.
