Horizon Farmland Biodiversity: Birds & Mammals

Funds two €6M projects that help farms support birds and mammals while protecting yields, improving natural pest control and building resilient food systems.

ScheduledEuropean CommissionEU

Farmland birds and mammals can support farming through pest control, pollination and seed dispersal, but they can also damage crops. This topic funds two projects to find practical ways to protect these animals and keep food production productive and resilient.

Projects should compare farming practices and their effects on bird populations, selected mammals and farm productivity. They can study t

Researching how farming practices affect common farmland birds, mammals and agricultural productivity, then testing locally tailored ways to improve habitats and ecosystem services. Projects should use participatory, landscape-level research with farmers, land managers and conservationists; improve or create targeted incentives; provide farmer education, advisory support, field days and demonstration farms; and test how proven biodiversity-friendly practices scale while maintaining productivity.
