Soils are under pressure from degradation, pollution, biodiversity loss and climate change, while farmers need productive and resilient crops. Biotechnology can help by restoring microbial balance, rebuilding soil carbon and structure, improving nutrient and water availability, and decontaminating degraded land.

Develop, upscale, pilot and validate sustainable, cost-effective biotechnologies—especially soil-microbiome solutions such as bio-based fertilisers and microbial inoculants—that remediate pollution, restore soil health and improve crop quality and productivity across diverse conditions. Assess economic, environmental and social impacts, cost-benefit, adoption barriers and market potential; build regulatory and risk-assessed routes to safe deployment; apply circularity; and use a mandatory multi-actor approach with value-chain stakeholders. Projects target TRL 5-6 and must collaborate with other funded projects and communicate jointly.
