Novel approaches to geothermal resources development
Funds demonstrations of new drilling, subsurface engineering and reservoir technology that cut the cost and risk of geothermal energy projects.
Projects must include a clear go/no-go milestone before entering the demonstration phase, backed by detailed engineering plans, a techno-economic assessment and permitting evidence. To keep a balanced portfolio, the Commission commits to funding at least the top-ranked proposal in each of the shallow and deep geothermal areas. The call wants innovation actions demonstrating advances in subsurface engineering, well design/drilling/completion, or reservoir characterisation for either shallow geothermal (0-500m depth, under 150C) or deep geothermal (beyond 500m, above 150C) resources. Proposals must state which of the two depth/temperature areas — or both — they address.
