Better understanding incentives for private sector financing of adaptation solutions
Funds research into why the private sector rarely finances climate adaptation, and tests at least eight real case studies of new ways to make that financing happen.
This Research and Innovation Action is paid as a lump sum. Each of the required case studies must first calculate whether the economic benefits of an adaptation solution — avoided losses, retained revenue, lower insurance costs, monetised co-benefits — already outweigh its costs; where they don't, the case study must then propose and test non-financial ways to make private investors fund it anyway, such as new investment concepts, financing mechanisms or business models. At least 3 of the minimum 8 case studies must use nature-based adaptation solutions, and covering a mix of climate hazards and the Mission's five key community systems — critical infrastructure, health and well-being, water management, land use and food systems, and ecosystems — counts as a positive element in the proposal.
