Soil Salinity in Europe: Drivers, indicators, current levels and temporal changes

This is a single-stage Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Action that closed for applications on 30 September 2025, funding one project worth EUR 6 million, paid as a lump sum. The European Commission wants research that quantifies current soil salinity levels across Europe and builds a model to predict how salinity will shift as the climate changes. Proposals should combine high-resolution remote sensing with harmonised lab and monitoring protocols, study links between salinity, vegetation, soil biodiversity and drought, and assess saltwater intrusion risk in coastal regions. Work should identify salinization hotspots and propose land-management strategies to prevent, limit and repair salt-damaged soils.
