The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Invitational Fellowships for Research in Japan invite overseas researchers with outstanding records to engage in collaborative research and academic exchange at Japanese institutions. The FY2027 Second Recruitment accepts applications for the Short-term fellowship tier only; researchers seeking the Long-term tier must apply in the First Recruitment of a given fiscal year. JSPS runs the programme within its larger international fellowship portfolio, which covers postdoctoral fellowships, the Core-to-Core Program, and the International Joint Research Program across all research disciplines.

The application deadline for the Second Recruitment is 23 April 2027 by 5:00 p.m. JST, with selection results published in early August 2027. Fellows may arrive in Japan between 1 October 2027 and 31 March 2028. The Electronic Application System opens approximately two months before the deadline. As with all JSPS invitational fellowships, the host institution in Japan submits the application to JSPS on behalf of the invited researcher — the overseas researcher cannot submit directly and must first establish a Japanese host arrangement.

Researchers targeting this second call should focus exclusively on Short-term eligibility criteria and plan their host-institution engagement well before the April 2027 deadline. The fellowship period runs from the day the fellow arrives at a Japanese airport to the day of departure; fellows already residing in Japan before the fellowship period are subject to separate rules. Because the Second Recruitment closes the FY2027 cycle and accepts only Short-term applications, researchers interested in Long-term support should plan for a future First Recruitment cycle.
