RFCS Coal Pilot and Demonstration Projects
Funds pilot and demonstration-scale coal-transition projects — carbon capture, mine repurposing, environmental remediation — bridging research and industrial deployment.
This is a single-stage RFCS Project Grant, one of six topics sharing the RFCS-2025 call alongside a matching Coal Research Projects topic and four separate steel topics. Applicants submit the Standard Application Form (RFCS) together with a detailed budget table through the EU Funding & Tenders Portal, and proposals are run by multi-entity consortiums rather than single applicants. Every proposal …
This topic funds pilot and demonstration projects under the Research Fund for Coal & Steel's coal research objectives in Council Decision 2008/376/EC: carbon capture and storage, geothermal reuse of former coal sites, mine-waste valorisation, repurposing of closing and former coal mines, and reskilling coal-region workers, tied to the European Green Deal's just-transition goals. Each proposal must assess its expected industrial, economic, social and environmental benefits.
