Two application windows run each year, January to March and July to September, each moving through the same pipeline: an eligibility check shortly after the window closes, then peer review by experts in the applicant's field, a pre-panel review, and a panel meeting made up of Academy Fellows and other experts, with outcomes going out roughly five months after the window closes and no interview at

The Academy of Medical Sciences funds UK-based clinical lecturers in human medicine, dentistry or veterinary medicine to run a discovery-research project, so they can build a track record toward a longer-term fellowship. The project must fall within the remit of Wellcome, the Medical Research Council, or one of the scheme's other named supporters (including Cancer Research UK, British Heart Foundation, Diabetes UK and Kidney Research UK). Applicants must hold a PhD or MD, a clinical contract at a UK institution, and be within a defined early-career window.
