Innovate UK Innovation Loans (Future Economy) is a patient-capital loan programme operated by Innovate UK, the UK's national innovation agency and part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). The programme is designed to provide long-tenure, below-market-rate financing to UK SMEs engaged in late-stage research and development or early commercialisation activities where grant funding alone is insufficient and conventional commercial debt is unavailable. It operates as a distinct series from the EDGE Growth Loans product and is structured to recur biannually, meaning application windows open periodically rather than continuously.

Loans are available to UK-registered micro, small, and medium enterprises; large companies, nonprofits, charities, universities, and individuals are excluded. The programme covers 100% of eligible project costs in qualifying cases. Under recent rounds, loan sizes have ranged from GBP 100,000 to GBP 5,000,000 per project, with a total programme pot of GBP 25 million across concurrent rounds. Interest during the project phase has been set at 3.7% per annum on drawn amounts, with deferred interest at the same rate; the repayment phase carries a combined rate of approximately 7.4% per annum. Loan terms extend up to seven years in total, comprising up to five years of project phase followed by up to five years of repayment. The programme is sector-agnostic, serving innovation across all industries.

Successful applicants must demonstrate not only technical merit and commercial potential but also financial viability — specifically, the ability to service and repay the loan. Innovate UK assesses both the quality of the R&D project and the borrower's financial robustness. Teams seeking funding should anticipate a robust due-diligence process and should document clearly why alternative commercial financing has been exhausted before applying.

Provides patient-capital loans of up to GBP 5 million to UK SMEs for late-stage R&D and early commercialisation projects across any sector where commercial debt is unavailable.
