Wild Card EDGE is the Scottish EDGE category designed for pre-trading businesses, sole traders, and partnerships — entity types that are explicitly excluded from the Main Scottish EDGE category. It provides a grant-only award of up to £15,000 with no repayment obligation, funded out of the Round 27 total prize pool of £1.5 million across all EDGE categories. The Round 27 application deadline was 25 March 2026 at 2pm, shared across all Scottish EDGE categories.

The Wild Card category is a judges' award, meaning the assessment panel must collectively agree on recipients rather than applying a purely algorithmic scoring rubric. Judges evaluate innovation broadly — not only the product or service itself, but also the founder's approach, the team's capabilities, and the design or brand concept. In Round 26, the top award of £15,000 went to Entropyst Ltd, with second-tier awards of £10,000 distributed to eight further businesses including Clovo, Formartine Bio Ltd, Luma, Offmon, PCOS Buddy, Quantatarce Ltd, Seastex Ltd, and ZygoteLink Ltd — demonstrating that the programme funds multiple recipients per round. All eligible businesses headquartered in Scotland may apply regardless of sector.

As with Young EDGE, the Wild Card top winner receives a place at a future Scottish EDGE Semi-final in addition to the prize money, creating a formal pathway into the Main competition track. Successful Wild Card recipients also receive business support from professional mentors. Applicants must submit an online application and a three-minute video pitch. Because the Wild Card category specifically serves pre-revenue and pre-trading entrants, applications do not need to demonstrate existing sales or turnover — the assessment instead weighs concept strength, founder credibility, and potential.

Grant-only awards of up to £15,000 for pre-trading Scottish businesses, sole traders, and partnerships that are not eligible for the main Scottish EDGE category.
