Some of the most useful cancer research starts as an idea nobody has tested yet, with no guarantee it goes anywhere, and most funding mechanisms are not built to back that kind of uncertainty.

Innovative, untested, high-risk basic cancer research advancing knowledge relevant to cancer treatment and patient care in the Military Health System. Incremental advances, the next logical step from existing work, and switching a model system from one cancer to another are explicitly excluded. Preliminary data is not required but a strong scientific rationale is. Includes a new FY26 Early Career Investigator Option.
