US Navy Challenge: Autonomous Detection of Marine Mammals
Pays teams up to $75,500 to build sensor systems that detect whales near naval and commercial vessels.
This challenge is run through InnoCentive as a Reduction-to-Practice Challenge, backed jointly by the Navy's Northwest and Northeast Tech Bridges alongside Impact Washington, 401 Tech Bridge, Maritime Blue and Quiet Sound โ so the eventual solution has to work for more than just Navy interests. A submission needs four parts: a detailed description of the solution and its sensor platform, the sourcโฆ
Looks for hardware and communications systems that detect Southern Resident Killer Whales and North Atlantic right whales in real time, using at least one above-water and one below-water sensor. Solutions should classify and display marine mammal locations so an autonomous or manned vessel can take proactive measures to avoid a strike.
