Cancer Prevention and Control Clinical Trials Planning Grant Program (U34)

Funds the preparatory study that answers the unknowns — accrual, endpoints, statistics, operations — before a cancer prevention trial is finalised.

The National Cancer Institute states its reasoning here more openly than most notices do, and the reasoning is about money.

Investigators usually have the literature or the preliminary data to justify a trial. What they lack is the practical detail — who the study population really is, whether accrual will work, whether the intervention can be delivered, what the endpoints and outcomes should be,

Preparatory studies filling information gaps before a cancer prevention and control clinical trial is finalised — study population, accrual, intervention, endpoints, statistical and data challenges and operational risks — and testing the feasibility of low-infrastructure trial designs, across prevention and interception, health behaviours, screening, early detection, healthcare delivery, symptom management, supportive care and survivorship. Clinical trials are optional.
