Developing novel theory and methods for understanding the genetic architecture of complex human traits (R01)
Funds theory and method development on how genetic and non-genetic factors together produce variation in complex traits, tested against large existing datasets.
Genome-wide studies find associations. They do not explain how a trait is actually built out of genes, environment, family and society acting together. This notice funds the theory and the methods for that harder question.
The variation in scope is across individuals, families and populations — three levels, not one — and both genetic and non-genetic factors are in play throughout.

Development of novel theory and methods explaining how genetic and non-genetic factors contribute to complex trait variation across individuals, families and populations, drawing interdisciplinarily on the natural and social sciences, accounting for interdependencies across biological, social and ecological scales, and validated extensively against existing large-scale datasets. Clinical trials are not allowed.
