Rigorously designed mechanistic studies, in animal models or human subjects, characterising person-specific host features — native microbiome, immune system, gender, diet, age, genetic background, lifestyle and health history — that affect probiotic response, to identify responder subgroups and address the heterogeneity causing inconsistent probiotic outcomes. Clinical trials are optional.
