Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation
Supports Greek biomedical and innovation research through a non-profit foundation with independent evaluation.
Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (HFRI, ELIDEK) is Greece's national independent funder for basic research. Established in 2016 under Law 4429/2016, it operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Development with support from the General Secretariat for Research and Innovation, and it is built around competitive peer review rather than administrative allocation.
Its calls cover PhD scholarships, postdoctoral project grants, faculty research projects, science and society initiatives, and high-value research equipment. The foundation's typical biennial call budgets range from about €1 million for Science and Society to €55 million for Faculty Members and Researchers, all in euros and all awarded through open competition to research teams and institutions.
HFRI is a fit for researchers who can compete on scientific excellence, whether at doctoral, postdoctoral, or faculty level. The program mix favors fundamental research, strong research environments, and clear project design, with equipment and public-engagement calls extending the same excellence-first model into infrastructure and outreach.
