Horizon Space: EO & SatCom Demonstration Missions
Funds €5–10M consortium projects that mature Earth observation and SatCom technology to flight readiness, ahead of real demonstration missions.
Europe’s Earth observation and satellite communication systems need to get smarter to stay competitive — more autonomous, more secure, and better at turning raw signals into usable data and services. This topic funds getting that next generation of technology ready for real demonstration missions, not early lab research: activities are expected to reach TRL 7-8, on the ISO 16290:2013 scale used ac…
Mid-to-high TRL development of digital technology for Earth observation and satellite communication systems, aimed at getting it ready for real demonstration missions. In scope: end-to-end SatCom capabilities (secure services, satellites as network nodes, flexible RF payload testbeds, onboard signal processing), LEO/VLEO Earth observation equipment (real-time on-board processing, ground segment interoperability, multi-source data fusion), and technology shared across both — including a ‘tip and cue’ demonstration that links radio-frequency and EO sensors over inter-satellite links. Proposals may address more than one of these areas but have to clearly identify the single main one. Work covers on-ground testing in a relevant environment and, where flight is feasible, in-orbit software demonstration.
