Horizon Mobility: Rural Road Safety and Resilience
Funds two €6M projects piloting road-safety fixes and a climate-risk mapping tool for rural roads, to help regional authorities cut crash deaths.
More than half of all EU road deaths happen on rural roads, and crashes there don't behave like crashes on motorways or in cities. The EU's Vision Zero goal is no road deaths by 2050, and local and regional authorities are on the front line of getting there.

Piloting road-safety improvements and a climate-risk mapping tool for rural roads, run as real projects in at least three regions rather than a single case study. Each project has to extend the EU's network-wide road safety assessment method to secondary rural roads, design and test enforcement and prevention measures that change driver behaviour, and build a GIS tool that shows local and regional authorities where extreme weather threatens their road network. At least two of the three-plus regions have to be in a country with an above-EU-average rural road fatality rate, so the work lands where the problem is worst, not just where it's convenient to run.
