Soil testing across the EU is inconsistent. Sampling methods, lab equipment, calibration and even human judgement all vary, and soil itself is naturally variable from one field to the next. Coordination and Support Action funding networking, training and tool-building work that helps land managers, laboratory staff, advisors and policymakers sample, analyse and interpret soil health data consistently. A single project, funded at a flat €5,000,000, has to run capacity-building activities for those groups; compile and promote standardised methods for soil sampling, analysis and monitoring-programme design; help combine soil data from different sources (direct sampling, proximal and remote sensing, and other methods); find, promote or build practical tools such as guides and apps for soil analysis and monitoring; run case studies or pilot platforms exploring how soil data can be shared; and work directly with standardisation bodies so the protocols it produces match what those bodies are building. Its resources have to stay open to any interested stakeholder, not just consortium partners, and it has to route its outputs through the EU Soil Observatory (EUSO) in collaboration with the SoilWise project.
