Horizon Soil Mission: Ukraine Innovation Support
Funds one €5M coordination project connecting researchers, farmers and policymakers to rebuild soil health knowledge and capacity across war-affected Ukraine.
Ukraine's soils are in bad shape. Years of tough land management left them acidified, eroded, compacted and short on nutrients — and the war made it worse, releasing toxic elements into the ground and damaging ecosystems and public health together. Mapping Ukraine's soil-health stakeholders and existing initiatives, then running a skills-and-knowledge-transfer programme for them: training, workshops, networking, twinning, conferences and field visits, split between building capacity for participatory, interdisciplinary R&I approaches and transferring practical soil-health knowledge, especially results from the EU's 'A Soil Deal for Europe' Mission. Proposals also stand up regional knowledge hubs inside Ukraine to keep that exchange going, and produce recommendations for policymakers and land managers on sustainable soil practices and technologies, covering degradation from military action, other pressures, and climate change. All hands-on activity runs inside Ukraine, in areas without ongoing or active military actions.
