Pre-Normative Research on hydrogen odorisation: enhancing safety and detection along the hydrogen value chain

Funds research into safe, non-toxic odorants and detection methods so 100% hydrogen networks can be smelled the way natural gas is today.

This Research and Innovation Action is paid as a lump sum under the Commission's 2021 lump-sum-contributions decision — lump sums are used across every topic in the Clean Hydrogen JU's 2026 call. Award criteria, scoring and thresholds sit in the Work Programme's General Annex D, and the submission and evaluation process and grant-agreement timeline sit in Annex F, common to every topic in this Wor…

This topic wants pre-normative research that develops and tests odorants for hydrogen, since the substances used to give natural gas its warning smell do not work the same way in pure hydrogen. It is looking for chemical characterisation, olfactory detection testing at very low concentrations, stability and degradation testing, and de-odorisation methods for sensitive end-use appliances. Applicants are expected to feed results into European or international safety standards for the hydrogen value chain.
