This call supports the Soil Deal for Europe Mission's goals of reducing soil pollution and enhancing restoration and cutting the EU's global footprint on soils, and it also feeds into the EU Bioeconomy Strategy and the Nature Restoration Law. The European Commission wants research that models how soil properties, land suitability and water dynamics shape biomass production across farmland, forests and peatlands. Proposals should build decision tools for land managers, drawing on existing soil databases such as the EUSO repository and EJP SOIL's field experiments, and concentrate on Europe's ten most important crop and biomass plant types. Work must also weigh the social, economic and environmental sides of production and keep outputs interoperable with the EU Soil Observatory.
