Applied Research for a Competitive Food Sector and Sustainable Transitions is a Formas call issued within Sweden's national research programme for food. The call funds needs-driven research that connects academia and industry to develop knowledge and solutions for the food sector, including processing technologies, digital solutions, product design, sensory science, and business-model innovation.
Projects run for 36 months and may request up to SEK 8 million from Formas, with a total call budget of SEK 70 million. Companies can receive support for up to 65 percent of eligible costs, which means a company partner must cover at least 35 percent of its own costs through cash or in-kind contribution. Funds are paid monthly, with the first payment scheduled for December 2026 if the project is approved and conditions are met.
Business parties may apply for funding directly from Formas, and the call is built for collaboration between academia and industry. Organisations that need individual approval as administrating organisations must arrange Prisma organisation access before applying. Foreign companies and organisations may participate in a project but are not eligible for Formas funding.
Applications were submitted through Prisma as an organisational call. The application deadline was April 28, 2026 at 14:00, the administrating organisation had to sign within seven calendar days after closing, and decisions are expected in October 2026. Applications are assessed by an external panel on relevance, potential, implementation, and actors.
As of this refresh, the call is closed to new applications. The page remains useful because it defines a distinct company-winnable Formas food-sector grant route; applicants should monitor Formas for a successor cycle rather than attempting to submit late.
Applied research for sustainable, healthy, and scalable food processing, including process technology, digital solutions, product design, sensory science, side-stream use, business models, and food-system transition.
