The Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA) operates a Rolling Opportunity Seeds call that provides up to £500,000 per project for bold early-stage proposals across selected Opportunity Spaces. ARIA is a UK government agency established to fund high-risk, high-reward research that would not typically attract conventional funding. The rolling format is intentionally experimental — ARIA uses it to test ideas and refine future programme calls rather than operate a fixed annual cycle.

As of mid-2026, the rolling call is active for three Opportunity Spaces: Mathematics for Safe AI, Scoping Our Planet, and Scalable Neural Interfaces. Projects must be at TRL 1–4, and the active pool is estimated at £20 million across approximately 40 awards. Eligible applicants include UK-based for-profit companies, nonprofits, universities, research organisations, and independent researchers — one of the few ARIA calls that accepts individual applicants. Lead applicants are generally expected to be UK-based, though international collaborators are not excluded.

Applications are submitted through ARIA's grant platform and reviewed by the relevant Programme Director's team on a rolling basis — there is no fixed deadline for the current active spaces. Proposers should check the published call for proposals on ARIA's website to confirm which Opportunity Spaces are currently accepting submissions, as the selection changes over time. Bold and unconventional approaches are strongly encouraged; the call is designed for proposals that challenge mainstream assumptions.
