This fellowship supports registered healthcare professionals with a PhD to reacquire research skills and re-establish research momentum. It is for people who have not undertaken substantial periods of academic research since their PhD and who plan to pursue a clinical academic research career.

In scope: applications across all areas of the MRC remit to improve human health, from basic studies with relevance to mechanisms of disease to translational and developmental clinical research. Global health research should align with the core remit spanning biomedical discovery research to early translational research. The proposed clinical work is expected to help inform and strengthen the research work. For veterinarians, the proposed project must be relevant to human health. Not funded: costs for PhD studentships, publication costs, funding to use as a ‘bridge’ between grants, costs for sponsors or mentors, costs for a large research team, or costs for senior staff included under any role.
