In scope are academically led experimental medicine projects conducted in humans, based around a clearly articulated gap in understanding of human pathophysiology and a clear path to clinical impact. Applications must involve an experimental intervention or challenge in humans, with safety profiles established, designed to validate a mechanistic hypothesis. Out of scope are biomarker discovery, pre-clinical model development and validation, development and evaluation of novel therapeutics, diagnostics or devices, high-throughput screening approaches to target validation, late-phase clinical efficacy trials, and observational studies involving no experimental challenge.
