Some biomedical problems are too big for one investigator's project. They need several linked studies running at once, shared equipment and expertise behind all of them, and years to show results. This is NIH's standing mechanism for exactly that kind of program, open across virtually every institute rather than tied to one disease or topic.

Broadly based, multidisciplinary Specialized Center (P50) research programs built around one major scientific objective, combining an administrative core, one or more research projects and at least one resource core, with an optional pilot-projects core. Fit is judged against the programmatic interests of one or more participating NIH institutes and centres.
