Two ways of watching a tumour respond to treatment exist and they are rarely used together. Imaging shows where and how big. A liquid biopsy — a fluid-based assay reading tumour material from blood — shows what is changing molecularly. Each misses what the other sees.

The National Cancer Institute funds integrating them during therapy in patients, to work out the optimal use of the two modalities…

Integration of imaging and fluid-based tumour monitoring, or liquid biopsy, assays during cancer therapy in patients, to determine the optimal use of both modalities in characterising therapy response and the emergence of resistance. Clinical trials are optional.
