Precision and Systems Biology to Uncover the Link Between Chronic and Infectious Diseases
Funds consortium research using multi-omics and AI on how infections cause chronic illness, and how chronic illness worsens infections.
An infection can leave someone with a health problem that lasts for years after the infection itself is gone, and a long-term illness can make someone more vulnerable to the next infection. NIAID wants both directions of that relationship mapped, not just one.

Multidisciplinary, consortium-based precision systems biology research uncovering pathways between chronic illness, infectious disease and the microbiome, using multi-omics, computational modelling, artificial intelligence, organoid-based validation, real-world data integration and digital health records, applied to longitudinal patient cohorts and biobank data to analyse genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors in disease progression and host-pathogen interaction.
