The NIDDK Disorders of Gastrointestinal Interoception Consortium Clinical Centers (DGIC)

Funds one of up to six clinical research centers studying disorders where the gut and nervous system miscommunicate, from gastroparesis to related conditions.

Gastroparesis and related stomach and bowel disorders cause nausea, vomiting and irregular bowel habits that are hard to explain and harder to treat, because the underlying wiring between the gut and the nervous system is still poorly understood. NIDDK calls that wiring problem interoception, and this notice funds the clinical centers that would study it directly.

Up to six Clinical Research Cent

Clinical Research Centers studying disorders of gastrointestinal interoception — impaired sensing and processing of gut signals — across adult and pediatric populations, expanding beyond gastroparesis into the wider set of functional GI disorders that share nausea, vomiting and altered bowel habits. Centers are expected to connect gut motility and sensory mechanisms to disease or treatment-response biomarkers and to new therapeutic targets, working alongside a companion Scientific Data Research Center that coordinates the consortium's data and biospecimens.
