Maine Technology Institute
Funds innovation in Maine through state-backed small business programs and matched financial support.
Maine Technology Institute is a quasi-public corporation created by the Maine Legislature in 1999 to accelerate the state’s innovation economy. Since then it says it has deployed more than $372 million across 4,000+ projects in all 16 Maine counties.
MTI funds Maine-based businesses in aquaculture and marine, biotech and life sciences, composites, environmental technologies, forest products and agriculture, information technology, and precision manufacturing. Its core route is Business Innovation Funding, a rolling program that can provide grants, loans, or equity from $10,000 to $250,000 with a 1:1 match, alongside TAP federal proposal support, MERC consulting help, innovation-ecosystem grants, and event sponsorships.
The application flow starts with a Startup Questionnaire, and the emphasis stays on products or methods with clear economic impact and market validation. MTI delivers directly rather than through a partner, which makes it a practical first stop for Maine founders that need early capital plus help navigating federal opportunities.
