Instrumental climate records cover only a short part of Earth's history. Palaeoclimate evidence from geological, biological, ice-core, sediment and tree-ring records shows how climate and ecosystems behaved during warm and cold periods, deglaciations and abrupt events. Palaeoclimate research that reconstructs climate variability across years to millennia and uses those records to improve Earth-system models. Projects should aggregate high-resolution, well-dated and interoperable proxy data; compare model outputs directly with palaeo data; identify thresholds, tipping points, feedbacks and abrupt transitions; and integrate large-scale and regional factors under natural forcings.
