Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU)

Urban-industrial symbiosis for bio-waste valorisation

Funds a full-scale flagship biorefinery that turns separately-collected urban bio-waste into higher-value bio-based products instead of compost or biomethane.

The flagship has to include a specific task applying the EU's safe-and-sustainable-by-design framework to the products it develops, and go further by proposing recommendations that advance the framework itself, including flagging gaps in the underlying safety, environmental and socio-economic data. A separate task has to assess the social side of the project directly: local employment created, any…

The call wants a full-scale biorefinery model that converts separately collected urban bio-waste, and optionally other bio-based residues, into added-value products beyond today's standard compost and biomethane outputs. Proposals must address collection logistics, urban-industrial symbiosis, and the regulatory end-of-waste criteria that determine whether the output can be sold.
